Most of the 388.000 inhabitants live in or near the capital Reykjavik. The first people to arrive in Iceland in the 9th century were the Vikings and most people in Iceland stem from these Nordic tribes. It became an independant nation in 1917 when it regained its sovereignty from Denmark. Iceland is geologically very active with several recent volcanic eruptions. For the traveller Iceland offers a great nature experience with desolate and stunningly beautiful landscapes to explore.
