The site was inhabited as early as the fourth millenium BC. During the period of Pericles in the fifth century BC most of the important present remains where constructed. Much has been destroyed during clashes with the Venetians and later the Ottomans. The most famous structure remaining today is the Parthenon, a temple dedicated to the godess Athena. It's an impressive sight. The Acropolis is a Unesco World Heritage site.
